Steve Moneghetti AM returns to Port Douglas

The Tropical Journeys Great Barrier Reef Marathon Festival is proud to announce that Olympic legend Steve Moneghetti is a confirmed starter for this year’s 42.195km marathon in Port Douglas on the 1st November.

Moneghetti has been the event Ambassador since 2011 and given the marathon is named in his honour he says he is once again up for the Challenge.

In 2014 Steve Moneghetti was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for “significant service to athletics as a marathon runner, administrator and mentor to young athletes.”

“I am running fewer marathons each year, and am increasingly focusing on the premier events and the courses that provide a real challenge. And there is no doubt that the Tropical Journeys Great Barrier Reef Marathon is both a wonderful and unique event,” Moneghetti recently said. “And then to throw the Bump Track right in the middle – that is awesome and cruel at the same time. It’s a marathon that participants will never forget,” he added.

In 2014 Moneghetti could not run down local champion, Jimmy Hilton and this year it appears as though he will not have the opportunity for revenge as Hilton has entered the half marathon event – a race that is stacked with talented athletes.

The addition of local company Tropical Journeys as the Naming Rights Sponsor for the next three years has also been welcomed by Steve Moneghetti. “The corporate and community support for this event is infectious. When I first arrived I was blown away by the community spirit and commitment to raising funds for the reef and now to have one of Australia’s leading reef operators supporting the event – well that’s perfect,” said Moneghetti.

Tropical Journeys are looking to host as many locals and visitors to the region as possible on a Reef Recovery Day on Monday 2nd November on one of their Calypso fleet or on the magnificent Aquarius to the Low Isles. What a way to relax, chill out and share your race stories after the event.
