Red carpet event brings opera to Port Douglas

Port Douglas Clink Theatre plays host to operatic master pieces by composers Verdi, Puccini, Schonberg and Bizet showcasing songs from fabulous productions including La Traviata, Madam Butterfly, Les Miserables and Carmen from 17th to 20th September.

Newsport Opinion Contributor Richard Stoker was fortunate enough to attend the first dress rehearsal and offers his perspective.

“A few minor hiccups always occur this early but all performances were strong there’s no doubt that ‘it’ll be alright on the night’.

“The chorus at times blew the roof off as it should have and had a breath-taking effect upon the audience.  Considering that most of the cast of about thirty were FNQ amateurs; a superb effort which no doubt over the next couple of weeks, will get even better.

“The formal attire requirement of the patrons is as it should be to set the mood for a wonderful night at the opera, and from now until September 17, the writer will be dieting on fresh air, lettuce leaves and celery sticks, so as to fit into his tuxedo.

“Alteouise DeVaughn has done an excellent job in directing this production so far and deserves the full support of the community,” said Stoker.

Musical director Alteouise DeVaughn leads the production with a cast of many bringing with her over 40 years of musicology.

Originally from California her interest in singing began in high school.  After receiving a scholarship the sky was the limit. DeVaughn has attended the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester as well as the Juilliard School of Music in New York.

Involvement in some of the major opera houses throughout Europe and USA has seen the Mezzo-soprano perform a wide variety or roles. DeVaughn is a winner of the Luciano Pavarotti International Voice Competition, the George London Career Grant Silver Medal, New York City Opera’s Stanley Tausend Award, and the Leontyne Price Award from the National Negro Business Women’s Association.

“People know me as a singer. I believe everyone has a voice, that is why I teach Find Your Own Voice, it is about freeing yourself to sing anything you want,” said De Vaughn.

Like all other events involving Alteouise DeVaughn it is believed tickets will sell out quickly. This is expected to be a red carpet affair not to be forgotten. Ticket price includes Champagne and Canapés on arrival.
