National Citizenship Day is celebrated on the 17th September and today was an opportunity for PD to host a Citizenship Ceremony and Affirmation Ceremony for 16 new Australian citizens at Rex Smeal Park.

Pledges and affirmations were made from citizens from France, India, Sri Lanka, USA,Italy, New Zealand, Croatia, Netherlands, South Africa and Poland.

The official proceedings were presided by Mayor Leu with a warm reception of onlookers and supporters.

While citizenship celebrates Australian democracy, it is a unique symbol of formal identification with Australia, acknowledging responsibilities and privileges which allow people to participate fully in the community.

Mayor Leu commented “while being invited to preside over many events and ceremonies, being part of the Citizenship Ceremonies is my favourite.”

For such a civil ceremony one would think that it would take place in Council Chambers, however the back drop of Rex Smeal Park was the perfect setting in congratulating our new citizens.

Addressing the audience, Mayor Leu said, “I think it’s fantastic to enjoy the ceremony in spectacular surroundings and not only have you become part of Australia today, you have chosen to become part of our Douglas Shire.”
