Local pies win multiple awards in national pie comp

Local Port Douglas business Mocka’s Pies brings home eight awards in the recent Official Great Aussie Pie Competition held in Sydney, Olympic Park last week.
Now in its 26th year, it has been reported this competition has on many occasions turned small pie producers into million dollar business by winning.
As the original and biggest nationally recognised pie competition in Australia, the Official Great Aussie Pie Competition is highly regarded by the baking industry and represents the pinnacle of pie making excellence.
Meat pies are synonymous with the Australian way of life, they have also been coined our “national dish”. Even the 1970’s jingle “football, meat pies, kangaroos and Holden cars” conjures up the image of the Aussie favourite smothered in tomato sauce.
The humble meat pie has come a very long way since the 1970’s and now proudly wears the title “gourmet” and Mocka’s Pies entries are testament to the title.
They have been awarded for the following categories:-
Gold – Gourmet Vegetarian - Pumpkin, Spinach and Feta Pie
Silver – Gourmet Game - Crocodile Laksa Pie
Silver – Gourmet Game - Kangaroo Pie
Silver – Gourmet Red Meat - Sri Lankan Curry Beef Pie
Silver – Gourmet Poultry - Green Curry Chicken Pie
Silver – Gourmet Seafood - Seafood Pie
Bronze – Plain Chunky - Chunky Steak Pie
Bronze – Gourmet Brekkie - All Day Brekkie Pie
“Winning a medal at the competition is the ultimate goal for pie making professionals," said Mocka’s Pie owner Nigel Quinn.
This is their 4th year entering the competition and they plan on entering next year.
“We are looking into a gluten free pie and a new style of brekkie pie and plan to enter them next year.
“We have received great support from our customers and tourists,” said Quinn.
Quinn attributes the win to great staff and a supportive partner combined with quality ingredients and love as being the key ingredients in creating award winning Mocka’s Pies.
Newsport asked Mr Quinn where to from here and his response was “keep on making pies,” he said with a laugh.
The annual competition, which is held in conjunction with Fine Food Australia, attracts thousands of entries from bakers across Australia which indicates that the standard of entries is top-notch.
