How will new leadership affect our region?

Earlier on Monday our then Prime Minister Tony Abbott brushed aside any rumours of a leadership challenge as “Canberra Gossip”.  Then Monday night, in what has been described as a dramatic late night party leadership ballot, Abbott received 44 votes to Malcolm Turnbull’s 54, making Turnbull Australia’s 29th prime minister.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop will remain deputy leader securing 70 votes against Kevin Andrews 30.

Whether PM Mr Turnbull can bring confidence back to the electorate by demonstrating his leadership skills, Gerry Ireland the President of Douglas Inc and a board member of the Douglas Chamber of Commerce, says “he has a very narrow window of opportunity.”

“It will depend on three components; the leadership style Mr Turnbull brings to government; the team he will select; and how that team can, in the immediate future, demonstrate 100 percent they are behind him and the changes he wants to make in terms of the electorate.”

Mr Turnbull’s career background demonstrates wide exposure within a dynamic and diverse background.  “His key qualities are his ability to articulate complex issues in a straight forward and instantly recognisable way for the electorate.

“Who MP Malcolm Turnbull selects as his team will need to be the best performing members of cabinet who resonate with the electorate using straight forward language with focus on the key issues, policy substance and communication style.

“Assuming Social Services Minister Scott Morrison becomes the new treasurer they will need to concentrate on the story that needs to be advocated to the electorate around the economy in terms of vision, clear strategy that is easy to understand.  If these three components do not work then we will have to ask ‘is the system broken’,” said Mr Ireland.

Leichhardt MP Warren Entsch says he is ready to work with the new Liberal Party leadership team of Malcolm Turnbull and Julie Bishop.

“This will certainly draw a line under all the speculation, now we’ve got to deliver and in my view, it’s business as usual.

“Now what we need is a good strong executive and a government that is run by the executive - that’s critical.  If we can emulate the success of the Howard government, which I was a member of for 12 years, I think our region and our country will be all the better for it.

“I will continue to focus on the things I want to achieve for our region, including implementing the commitments of our Northern Australia policy,” said Mr Entsch.

In Cairns recently, Mr Turnbull said if he could wind back the clock regarding the NBN he would ensure the government would implement for regional Australia only and have the cities relying on funding from other resources and investments.

“Mr Turnbull will ensure regional Australia has a high priority.  He has sense of regional Australia and a close working relationship with Federal Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch,” said Mr Ireland.
