Taskforce to review taxi, limousine and rideshare services
Published Thursday 8 October 2015
The Independent Taskforce will examine community and industry needs and expectations, public safety, disability access, affordability and competition and will deliver a final report with recommendations to the government in August 2016.
Will this review change the way we travel here in Port Douglas? With a number of different ways to travel around Port Douglas including taxi's, limousines, shuttles and now a hummer, this new review is certain to have an affect.
The Queensland Government announced that the comprehensive review would consider the existing regulatory framework which could be improved due to industry reform being long overdue.
With new competitor in the market Uber, this may change the way taxi, limousine and rideshare services operate in the Douglas Shire.
The need for the review is driven by the upcoming expiration of the Queensland Taxi Industry Strategic Plan 2010-2015.
Deputy Premier and Minister for Transport, Jackie Trad said “we need to outline a pathway for this industry that considers current and new players and ensures a level playing field for all taxi, limousine and rideshare services.
“We have worked hard to ensure a broad range of issues facing this complex industry are incorporated in our Terms of Reference for the Taskforce’s consideration,” Ms Trad said.
Personalised transport services include taxi and limousine services and other services provided for a fare where the passenger determines the destination.
There are currently more than 3,200 taxis and 580 limousines operating legally across the state.
Newsport has made contact with local operators and is awaiting comment regarding the review and possible changes. We also welcome our readers comments directly below.
