Swimfit on Four Mile set to return in 2016

Published Tuesday 20 October 2015

Around 100 people gathered on Four Mile Beach on the morning of Saturday October 17th to compete and support the inaugural Swimfit Four Mile Beach Ocean Swim.

Port Douglas, QLD is famous for its beautiful tropical climate and the Coral Sea is only ever imaged crystal blue, but that’s not the conditions that had to be dealt with on Saturday morning. Moderate to strong wind and rain made the challenging swim even more of a challenge!

The feature Sheraton Mirage Port Douglas Resort Four Mile Swim 6.4km was battled out between 8 competitors. Organiser Irene Cats said “the reason I am organising this swim is because I wanted to swim a long distance ocean swim and there is not a lot of them in North Queensland, but I had no idea if there was any other crazy people with the same aspiration, so it was great to see there were a few more people joining me!”

The battle between 1st and 2nd male in the 6.4km race turned out to be a close battle with only 6 seconds between Ed Lukin and Eldon O’Regan, who would’ve imagined that in a close to 2 hour race!

Mitchell Knight was the true winner in the Hive Swimwear Two Mile Swim (3.2km) finishing more than ten minutes before the number 2 in this race consisting of two 1.6km laps.

The biggest swim was the Port Douglas Watersport One Mile Swim (1.6km) with 14 competitors on the start line ready to take on the rough ocean conditions.

All prize getters came over the finish line within a few minutes with, as the highlight, the father and daughter team Mia Devine Cameron and Colin Cameron high fiving across the line.

The Newsport 500 Meter swim was a great opportunity for some brave ladies to test the waters of ocean swimming and all proved to be true fighters, punching through the waves!

“I am so happy with how the inaugural Swimfit Four Mile Beach Ocean Swim turned out and I can’t wait to do it again next year in hopefully some calmer conditions,” said Ms Cats.

A big thank you to all sponsors, Sheraton Mirage Port Douglas Resort, Hive Swimwear, Port Douglas Watersports, The Newsport and Vorgee. And an even bigger thank you to the Port Douglas Surf Life Saving Club for ensuring everyone made it safely back onto the beach!

Swimfit is proud to have raised $150 with this event to be donated to the Port Douglas Surf Life Saving Club.
