Super fast Broadband 3 year rollout
Published Monday 19 October 2015
The NBN plans to rollout super fast broadband over the next 3 years. A comprehensive construction plan released today, aims to network 9.5 million premises nationwide.
Locally, 6520 homes and businesses in the Douglas Shire will benefit from this rollout.
Not all properties will have the same technology access to receive their broadband. This depends on where they live.
Mowbray is first on the list for improvements, with 120 homes from July 2016 able to access Fixed Wireless broadband. Fixed Wireless broadband technology provides a wireless access link from your premises to a wireless base station connected to the NBN network.
Craiglie and Port Douglas, next in line from January 2017 will see 5,000 homes and businesses upgrade to Fibre to the Node broadband technology. Fibre to the Node is very fast broadband, it works by running fibre to a neighbourhood node/pillar. The existing copper network is then connected to the premises.
The Fibre to the Node rollout continues through 2017 to Bonnie Doon, Cooya Beach and Mossman benefitting a further 1,400 properties.
The Hon. Warren Entsch, Federal Member for Leichhardt, said, “we understand that internet access is vital for our community and will transform education, healthcare and other critical online services”.
During the previous labor government, the NBN connected 51,000 premises to its networks.
“This plan demonstrates our commitment to rural and regional Australia in closing the digital divide,” Mr. Entsch said.
