SLSC to launch new amenities block

Port Douglas Surf Life Saving Club will officially open their new amenities block with an invitation only launch in late November.

The new amenities block houses the shower and toilet facilities for male and female members together with disabled  and a storage room.

The total cost of the new block cost over $280,000.  It took the club many years of fundraising over $180,000 as well as a donation from the bistro, together with a generous grant of $100,000 from the Queensland Governments’ “Get Playing Places and Spaces Program” offered to eligible not for profit sports and recreation organisations to help improve facilities.

Brian Markham Building Treasurer said the facilities are a much needed asset.

“It means that the SLSC now have their own facilities away from the licensed area and original club house.  The SLSC felt there was a need to be separate from the licensed premises because of the kids and the fact that, as a national sports club, we are aware of the impacts of drugs and alcohol so it is good have the clubs own facilities," said Mr Markham.

Mr Markham also pointed out that the separate facilities will work well when the club or the bistro hold private functions and events as each now have their own amenities for guests and members.

The official invitation only launch will be held late November with a representatives from the Get Playing Places and Spaces Program and the Douglas Shire Council.
