Paws & Claws trivia fundraiser big success

Last Wednesday Paws & Claws Trivia night drew a big crowd while at the same time raising much needed funds to assist with ongoing expenses for the animal refuge.

Hosted by Kstar Charity Trivia at the Central Hotel, the charity event raised almost $3,000, which, said President Michael Kerr, means a lot to a small organisation like Paws and Claws.

“Having lump sums like this is very beneficial to the operation of the refuge. Based on last years figures the refuge costs an average of $1700 per week to operate. In the past most of the money has come from the boarding. As the property has deteriorated over the years the boarding revenue has declined. This means that these funds need to come from other sources such as fund raising, adoptions, sale of merchandise and what boarding we receive,” said Mr Kerr.

While the continuation of sourcing new premises for the refuge is still high on the agenda, it would appear that whilst it is still progressing, it’s still pretty much a waiting game.

“At this stage a letter of request was initiated by the committee to ask council if they are able to secure a block of land at Yule Point for the Association. This block is State Government owned so council needs to run a due diligence on the site whilst dealing with the appropriate departments to ensure once the land is purchased that it will be suitable for housing an Animal Refuge Centre. Hopefully we shall receive notification from council in the not so distant future on the outcome of this process,” said Mr Kerr.

In the meantime the refuge has reported that the facility is looking and running better than ever with a full time manager and strong volunteer base working with staff.

“The property is in A1 shape, whilst still old Kyle and the team have really cleaned the refuge up. There has been a lot of repair work done and you can tell the difference from the moment you work through the gate.

“We have also had a contractor working with the staff who has over ten years experience managing RSPCA shelters, so between them there are now great procedures and processes in place,” advised Kerr.

The committee is meeting on Monday the 26th October to discuss and set a date for the AGM to be held.
