At the end of August 2015 Port Douglas Community Services Network Inc (PDCSN) closed its doors to Cubby House due to lack of numbers making it an unsustainable service. The licence was suspended for 12 months.

The committee and staff of PDCSN, not wanting to wait till the end of the 12 month period to decide its future, are now placed in a position to make a decision based on the level of interest provided by families who want to attend the Cubby House.

At a meeting and via many phone calls Manager Siobhan Delgado advised families that PDCSN would review Cubby House coming into 2016.

“If we have the interest in the Cubby House re-opening as a service we would need to employ staff and get the centre organised for January 2016. We require 21 participants daily to make it a viable service. Presently I have five (5) families keen to see it re-open.

“If we don’t have the numbers we need to look at other options for the building.  Presently it is closed,” advised Ms Delgado.

During the issue of the closure of The Cubby, it was identified that the community there was a higher proportion of children aged five to 12 years than zero to five years.

“The after school supports for this age group are extremely limited. At the centre we have discussed other possible uses of the building and identified after school care, vacation and family support services are a necessity in the area and sadly lacking. While we have not developed this further, if we do not have the numbers for the Cubby House we will need to look at alternate options,” said Delgado.

Siobhan Delgado is inviting all families who are interested to contact her as soon as possible so that decisions may be made of the Cubby’s future and the alternative options for use of the facilities and building.
