World Kindness Day & Friday 13th
Published Friday 13 November 2015
Mark Twain summarised kindness as "the language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see.”
Today is World Kindness Day, it is also Friday 13th.
Friday 13th, is often associated with bad luck. However, there is no actual data to prove that the number 13 or Friday 13th is unlucky according to Igor Radun of the Human Factors and Safety Behaviour Group at the University of Helsinki's Institute of Behavioural Sciences in Finland. "There is no reason to believe that any number would be lucky or unlucky."
Superstitions surround the number 13, people avoid getting married or buying a house on this date, fearing it will bring them bad luck.
"There are no lucky or unlucky numbers; they exist only in our heads – or in the heads of some of us – and they might become lucky or unlucky only if we make them as such" Radun said.
So, maybe today, take the opportunity to make Friday 13th a good day.
In Australia we have, The Australian Kindness Movement, formed in 1994, whose major goal is to generate a greater sense of friendliness in the community through the medium of simple acts of kindness.
The World Kindness Movement (WKM) formed in 1997 in Japan has a mission to inspire individuals towards greater kindness and to connect nations to create a kinder world.
So, let’s forget about bad luck today and focus on how we can be kind instead.
Whether it’s a random act of kindness or just being friendly to someone in the street.
It’s nice being nice.
