Following the recent AGM and business forum held on the 29th October, Douglas Chamber of Commerce (DCC) have announced their newly appointed President.

With Phoebe Kitto of HR Dynamics stepping down from presidency after four years at the helm, Port Douglas’ Bendigo Bank Branch Manager Helen de Ross has been appointed as the new President of the Chamber with Phoebe remaining by her side as Vice President.

“In her relatively short time in the region, Helen has already gained a great deal of respect and confidence from the local business community and her appointment as President is a reflection of that,” said Ms Kitto.

“I have no doubt she will be successful in guiding the Douglas Chamber of Commerce over the next 12 months. This is a really positive time for the region and moving forward we are looking through a fresh set of eyes and renewed focus. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as President but as a mother, wife and business owner I feel I need to step back and spend more time with my family,”said Ms Kitto.

At the most recent committee meeting it was a sea of fresh faces with six new members joining the group including Cathie Jones from Tropical Journeys, Antonia Eggers from Martinique on Macrossan, Sheryn Blundstone from Peninsula Boutique Resort, Adam Barrell from Marino Moller Lawyers, Paul McMahon from Mossman Hotel as well as Sue Chapman from Verandahs Apartments.

Remaining committee members include Kym Rowley from the Tin Shed, Liz Ross from Far North Training & Consultancy, Gerry Ireland from the Douglas Inc, Wade Greasley from Niramaya Day Spa and Jess Uhlig of TNQ Marketing.

Top priorities for the group moving forward include the current WIFI crisis in the Douglas Shire, working on a new staff ‘induction program’ to increase local knowledge and customer service, as well as increasing support for local business through a series of events including the Shop Small ‘VIP Shopping Night’. 

Positive times lay ahead for the Chamber and the committee is encouraging new businesses to get on board, get their voice heard and help make a difference.
