The objective of the Business Development Fund is to provide opportunities to the business and not-for-profit sector to support the growth of local business and industry in the Shire advised Mayor Leu.

“We’re lucky to have such innovators in the Douglas Shire and Council wants to encourage the development of local businesses and organisations to help them reach new audiences.

“There’s a lot to be positive about for businesses in the Douglas Shire and I think we need to recognise this, understand what is working and then collaborate on where we can improve,” said Mayor Leu.

Local businesses and not-for-profit organisations will be invited to apply for up to $10,000 in funding to develop projects which encourage commercial investment in the Douglas Shire, expand tourism and agricultural business opportunities and benefits through collaborative planning and promotion and investigate opportunities for sports and cultural tourism.

Mayor Julia Leu said the launch of the Business Development Fund builds on the momentum established at Council’s recent inaugural Douglas Business Forum.

“At the Douglas Business Forum we had more than 100 local business delegates who were keen to share innovative ideas and foster industry partnerships to grow our economy,” Mayor Leu said.

“The launch of this new grant program now provides a funding opportunity for those that have a good idea and are enthusiastic about building on their business concept.

“This may include assisting with the establishment, development, growth and diversification of individual businesses, industries and specific business sectors within the region.

“The fund could also assist to enhance the skills and professional development of micro, small and medium-sizes owners and employees to develop their businesses and prosper within the region.

“There is also an opportunity to create economic development and investment opportunities which support social enterprises and employment opportunities for long-term unemployed as well as engage and provide opportunities for vulnerable and marginalised groups.”

Businesses and not-for-profit organisations that apply for funding through the Business Development Fund must contribute an equal amount to the project.

The Business Development Fund Guidelines will be available on Council’s website, at Council’s Mossman Administration Building and the Port Douglas Community Hub from 1 December and applications need to be received by 26 February 2016.
