Mossman locals Dad Eli, a lifelong Cowboys fan, and Mum Wendy gave birth to their son on 12th September 2015 within the first minute of the first of the NRL finals games between Brisbane Broncos and North Queensland Cowboys at 8:54pm.

Suffice to say the North Queensland Cowboys also went on to win the NRL Grand Final at Sydney’s ANZ stadium on 4th October, 2015.

It wasn’t until half-time of the NRL Grand final that the proud parents aptly decided to name their son Malu Thurston Porter Pitt in Johnathon Thurstons’s honour.

At the time Malu’s parents tried in vain to get a Cowboys shirt for him, unsurprisingly they were sold out.

The parents were also asked if they were hopeful of Malu Thurston Porter Pitt meeting Malus namesake Jonathan Thurston, Wendy said, “now that’s a silly question, I hope so!”

It is reported that, thanks to Shine’s Cairns branch manager Carrie Thomas, baby Malu Thurston met his namesake in the Far North recently when Johnathon Thurston and retired North Queensland Cowboys’ star Brent Tate visited the Shine offices.
