Port Douglas Markets hot food survey now open

Douglas Shire Council is asking the community and the business sector to provide feedback on whether a limited number of hot food stalls should be allowed at the iconic Port Douglas Markets.

The Port Douglas Markets currently operates with a “Cotters” theme and is primarily an arts and crafts market intended to showcase locally-produced wares.

Mayor Julia Leu said Council wants to hear from the community about their thoughts on introducing a limited number of hot food stalls to the markets and has developed an Issues Paper available on Council’s website.

“Port Douglas is one of the few markets Australia-wide without food which market visitors regularly question and allowing locally-produced snack-sized cultural dishes may add to the markets experience,” Mayor Leu said.

“On the other hand hot food stalls have the potential to compete with the local restaurants and food outlets so I particularly want to hear from nearby restaurants and cafes who feel they may be affected.

“I urge everyone who has an opinion on the issue to let Council know by either completing the online survey or providing their feedback to the Issues Paper at enquiries@douglas.qld.gov.au so we have a better understanding of the community’s wishes before making a decision on it.”

The Issues Paper is available on Council’s website www.douglas.qld.gov.au and the online survey can be completed at www.surveymonkey.com/s/FM9QM6P. Consultation closes on June 18.
