Douglas Shire mayor Julia Leu has welcomed the expansion of Port Douglas’s Reef Marina, saying the upgrade will bring increased superyacht traffic and economic activity to the region.

“The provision of extra berths at the Reef Marina with the capacity to accommodate superyachts is great news for the local economy,” Cr Leu said.

“More vessels, in particular superyachts, means more expenditure throughout the region as those aboard shop at our retail outlets, dine in our restaurants and enjoy local tours.

“We have the destination and the additional marina berth capacity means we can share it with more people.

“Other developments at the Reef Marina such as the opening of a new boardwalk bar and the refurbishment of Lure Restaurant will also benefit tourists and locals and demonstrate confidence in our region."

When asked, Cr Leu said she did not foresee the expansion causing any problems for other uses of the Marina and Dickson Inlet, such as the commerical fishing fleet.

“The commercial fishing fleet and the fishing industry play a key role in the identity and economy of Port Douglas and their ongoing future must be secured.

“Council does not anticipate any negative impacts on the fishing fleet or the Waterfront as a result of this expansion of the marina as any Council concerns were addressed in the planning process.”
