A large crocodile estimated to be about four metres long has been sighted off Oak Beach on Wednesday.

British traveller Saffron Larvin captured video of the croc as it cruised southwards about 25 metres off the beach.

Ms Larvin was about to go for a dip when alerted to the crocodile's presence by a fellow beachgoer who was walking his dog.

She grabbed her camera and followed the croc as it moved along the beach.

Ms Larvin, a frequent visitor to Port Douglas and enthusiastic wildlife photographer, said the croc seemed fairly relaxed.

"It was just chilling, just cruising through the sea and using the ocean as a highway, probably going from one creek to the next."

Ms Larvin acknlowledges the potential danger that crocs pose but says they should never be seen as monsters.

"They are such beautiful creatures, it was awesome to see it in its natural environment," she said.

"I'd swim with freshies or maybe a baby salty," she said.

"It'd be scary and if I get eaten, I get eaten - but I would never blame the croc, if I did get attacked that would be 100 per cent my fault."
