Council plans Front Street upgrade

Douglas Shire Council has released concept proposals for the Front St Streetscape Upgrade in Mossman and is keen to receive community feedback on the initiative.

Council invited businesses and residents to a presentation on the concept from the project team yesterday where the proposal was well-received.

Mayor Julia Leu said the community’s input into the streetscape rejuvenation and ownership of the end result was important to Council.

“Council consulted with key stakeholders including local businesses in developing the concept plans but the input of residents is just as important,”

Mayor Leu said.

“The main focus of the proposed streetscape upgrade preserves the town’s historic and rural charm while creating more public seating and putting additional trees in planter boxes along the street as well as new street furniture such as bins.

“We wanted to make ‘Triangle Park’ a feature of the streetscape upgrade and create a welcoming open space where people can relax and enjoy the beautiful surrounds which includes an area dedicated to public art.”

Mayor Leu said the Front St upgrade was just stage one of Council’s plan to rejuvenate important Mossman streetscapes.

“Council has also identified Mill St and Johnston Rd as significant streetscapes we plan to enhance in partnership with the Mossman community over the next few years, but Front St is the first step,” Mayor Leu said.

“So much of Mossman’s pioneer history is connected to Mill St and Johnston Rd provides a vital link to the cultural richness of Mossman Gorge and our Kuku Yalanji rainforest people.”

The community has until 2 June to provide their feedback on the proposed Front St Streetscape Upgrade.
