Port Douglas ranks in as the fifth-best destination in Australia, having been bumped from the  number four position it held in 2014 by Cairns.

Four Mile Beach ranks in at number 8 in the Top 10 Beaches in Australia subcategory.

Tripadvisor’s description of Port Douglas extols the qualities of the seaside town as a premier holiday destination for foodies and nature enthusiasts alike.

“Tuck into five-star meals in Port Douglas, or suck down a killer cocktail at a casual swanky lounge,” the description reads.

“A perfect base for exploring the Great Barrier Reef, the rainforest at Daintree and the beaches at Cape Tribulation, this Queensland town has an out-of-this-world setting.

“Sunbathe on the golden sands of Four Mile Beach, then melt into perfect pampering at one of Port Douglas’ glorious day spas for the ultimate in relaxation.

Port Douglas businesses Wildlife Habitat and Blue Dive are both named in Port Douglas’s page as top reasons to visit the town.

Wildlife Habitat manager Claire Anderson said it was ‘fantastic’ news that the Habitat and Port Douglas had picked up the accolade.

“That’s very exciting news,” she said.

“We are always trying to deliver a quality experience to the customers and this is the positive feedback we’re really looking for.”

Blue Dive operator Mark Fraenkel was similarly excited.

“I think it’s a result of the dedicated effort of our small and brilliant team here at Blue Dive,” he said.

“It makes us very, very proud because we’re always trying to provide quality service, with a smile of course.”

Tourism Tropical North Queensland CEO Alex De Waal said the rankings were a win for the entire region.

“It’s fantastic to see,” he said.

“Many destinations want to be in tourism, but Tropical North Queensland is tourism - we have the highest resident to visitor ratio of anywhere in the country, about ten to one, which shows we are providing a tremendous product and promoting it very well.

“Add that to natural assets without peer and we’ve got a very good formula for tourism in this region.”

Mr De Waal said customer service would be key to advancing Tropical North Queensland even further up tourism rankings.

“It’s no major secret that it’s about making visitors feel like well-regarded guests - we need to be fantastic hosts, make them feel reluctant to leave and eager to come back.

“TTNQ has launched several projects including the ‘Hidden Secrets’ social media campaign.

“We have a full time commitment to improving service - we need to continue to hone our skills and provide great customer service.”
