Carnivale calls for volunteers

Port Douglas, 6th March, 2015 - Port Douglas Carnivale is putting the call out to would-be community-spirited volunteers keen to get involved in this year’s event from May 22 to May 31.
Port Douglas Carnivale general manager Roy Weavers said around 50 volunteers were required to help make the various events of the 10-day festival happen including the Macrossan Street Parade, Four Mile Beach Day, The Backyard Games and more.
“Every year, volunteers help make Carnivale a success and their enthusiasm and assistance is invaluable.
The volunteers take the pressure off the event co-ordinator on the day of the event, offering an extra pair of hands.
“There are a number of roles available, and you don’t need to be skilled in any particular thing,” Mr Weavers explained.
“For example, on the day of the Street Parade we need assistance with registration as well as float marshalls and crowd control.
“Down at the Family Beach Day we need helpers during the day to make sure everything runs smoothly with the children and the crowds for the Yabusame tournament.”
Mr Weavers said it wasn’t all hard work with a number of events also being a lot of fun.
“For the World Motorised Racing Cooler Championships and Backyard Games at the Marina on the first Sunday we need umpires for the individual games, and track marshals, offering an up close view of all the action.”
“We also try to include the volunteers in all the parties and end of show celebrations to show our appreciation.
“The willing army of volunteers make the atmosphere each year and Carnivale wouldn’t be the same without them,” he added.
He said volunteers were welcome to contribute as much or as little as they liked. “Time is precious and we are grateful for any time that an individual is willing to give us, this can be as little as one hour.”
