The Palm Cove and broader Cairns community is being urged to have their say on the future direction of the Palm Cove markets.

The markets have been held in several formats in the past few years, most recently as a night market in the jetty carpark. Prior to that they were held along the foreshore.

Division 9 Councillor Greg Fennell says: "The markets have not been so successful in their current location and previous options have raised safety concerns due to their proximity to Williams Esplanade.

"We want to create a destination market that will not only appeal to visitors but the Cairns community. To make that happen we need to hear from residents, businesses, stallholders and the broader Cairns public."

One proposal being considered by Council is a once-a-month Sunday market on Williams Esplanade. To ensure the safety of stallholders and market-goers the proposal includes closing Williams Esplanade between Harpa Street and Cedar Road on market days.

Feedback from the community will be considered by Council in its future planning for the market. This will also look at parking options, dedicated drop-off points and other infrastructure requirements.

"I want to stress this is just one idea," says Cr Fennell. "We want to know what the community wants, so I urge residents to complete a short survey or email us their suggestions or concerns."
