Cairns Airport yesterday officially welcomed its newest airline Regional Express (REX).

Rex commenced flights from Cairns on 1 January this year when they began services on the regulated Gulf route between Cairns and Mount Isa, Normanton, Karumba, Mornington Island, Burketown and Doomadgee.

REX also operate a weekend service between Cairns and Townsville.

Cairns Airport GM Operations, Kate McCreery Carr, welcomed Rex GM Network Strategy and Sales, Warrick Lodge, State Manager Queensland, Steve Jones and other REX representatives for the official welcome to the airline and celebrations for the Bamaga service and the Mt Isa service announcement.

“Since they commenced operations out of Cairns a short time ago REX has already proved to be a valuable airline partner for Cairns Airport,” Ms McCreery Carr said.

“Today REX commenced their regular service between Cairns and the Cape York town of Bamaga (NPA)and they have also announced a new direct service to Mt Isa.”

“The new Bamaga service operates every weekday providing an important link for people in the Northern Peninsula Area.”

“The direct Mt Isa service will provide another key link for Cairns with this busy mining centre. It will also see REX base two of their fleet of 52 Saab 340 aircraft here in Cairns along with a crew base, providing a great boost to the regional economy.”

“We understand that discussions with other areas on the Cape are continuing and we look forward to announcements of more REX services soon.”
