A group of ‘crazy’ Port Douglas athletes are taking advantage of their town hosting a segment of the Cairns Airporty IRONMAN 2015 triathlon to put themselves to the ultimate challenge.

Two Port Douglas teams, ‘The Muppets’ and ‘In The Zone Personal Training’ will be taking on the full Ironman race this year, which includes a 3.8-kilometre swim, a 180-kilometre bike ride and a 42.2-kilometre run.

They will be passing through Port Douglas’s for two laps of Macrossan Street from about 10:30 and will be identifiable by their team colours - blue outfits for In The Zone and green for the Muppets.

Most of the Port Douglas entrants had completed the half-length Ironman 70.3 race in 2014 and they are now looking to surmount the ‘ultimate physical challenge’

“We’re doing this because we want to challenge ourselves and help inspire others,” said team member Jess Uhlig.

“Also, because we’re a bit crazy.

“We’ve been training for five months and we’re really looking forward to getting out there, we really hope that there’s plenty of Port Douglas locals out on the day to cheer us on.

“Hopefully, the winds aren’t too bad.”

The race will start at 8:00am on Sunday at Palm Cove, with competitors expected to start coming through Port Douglas from about 10:30 onwards.
