Aurukun Shire Council is set to hold its biggest community concert this week when Christine Anu headlines on Saturday June 6 at the Wik Rock Concert.
The Rock Concert, funded from the PCYC’s Indigenous Active Today – Stronger Communities Tomorrow grants program and supported by Apunipima and Glencore, will be the culmination of a week of events kicking off today that sees the young people of Aurukun engaged in hip hop activities.
An Indigenous Hip Hop team will film and produce a documentary in the community this week developed by the young people themselves that will talk about the importance of respect, building self-confidence, strength through culture, health and wellbeing.
Health messages developed by young people during the Apunipima’s last foray into Aurukun’s Hip Hop scene will also be promoted. These include Let’s come together and get along, Respect our Elders and keep culture strong as well as getting people to get moving Dance and move and don’t feel shame and eat well, essentially keep ‘healthy, deadly and strong’.
Apunipima Health Promotion Officer Andrew Packer said the Hip Hop Project is about enhancing the social and emotional wellbeing of young people in the community and promoting healthy lifestyle messages.
“Engaging with young people in this way and getting them to develop dance skills around healthy lifestyle messages has a real impact on influencing positive change in their lives.”
“It’s about us helping young people to turn ‘deadly choices’ into routine choices.”
Apunipima will have a display at the Wik Rock Concert this weekend, highlighting key health messages including a ‘tackling smoking’ display.
