Iconic Mossman and District Show a time to celebrate and commemorate for all on 19th & 20th July

Agricultural Shows are quite unique because they give the opportunity for people to compete and display their many varied talents in their agricultural communities.

Agricultural Shows have a long history with the first held in Clermont in 1868 and gradually one by one other Show Societies formed and today there are 127 affiliated Show Societies in Queensland; and Mossman is one of them.

Roll Up Roll Up

The Queensland Chamber of Agricultural Societies QCAS states that a Show just would not be the same if there were no Sideshows present. The Showmen’s Guild of Australasia has had a long association with Agricultural Shows – with their association commencing in 1927.

Mossman Show Society Secretary Ann Baldwin has 11 years tenure as Secretary up her sleeve and has been in the Mossman area since 1975 “and I have only missed 1 show and that was because of the birth of my Granddaughter”. The Mossman Show is a popular country family event” says Ann.

Culinary exhibits are due and entries close from 8am to 12noon Saturday 18th July and the Needlework exhibits are due and entries close before 2pm Friday 17th July.

The Arts & Craft and Photography Sections exhibit entries closed 4pm Wednesday 15th July.

Anything Goes

Another iconic event is the “Anything Goes Team” competition.  In its 6th year of participation, the event is outrageous because the challenges are not known by the entrants until the start of the event so it is unpredictable and there is no time to prepare, the entrants have no idea what to expect.

The total prize money up for grabs is $4,000 and the teams elect to donate their winnings to their chosen charity or not for profit organisation.

President Matty Hatfield says it is all about “team work and it’s not all brawn. There is a combination of some physical and mental challenges. Last year was one of our best and the team that won was actually coming in last all the way until the final challenge, so it’s all about strategy and team work.  We really want to encourage people to dress up, there is no set theme.”

Mr Hatfield would like to remind teams to get their entries in as early as possible “we would like entries to be in by the afternoon on Friday 17th July.

Shows play a major role in the economy of the district and also attract many visitors to the area during that particular time. Show Societies have the largest number of volunteers in Australia assisting in the organisation of a Show and without this support Show Societies would not exist. So come along and show your support for an iconic and historical event.
