We fought hard to get Pirates into Port: Council

Douglas Shire Council has said it has done everything in its power to try and make sure the production of Pirates of the Caribbean 5: Dead Men Tell No Tales comes to Port Douglas.

Despite previous statements by Disney and Screen Queensland that Port Douglas would be a filming location for the mega-blockbuster, rumours are now flying that production will remain on the Gold Coast.

Council operations manager Paul Hoye said council staff put in the yards to attract the producers to Douglas Shire.

“Council has had a number of interactions, emails, phone calls and meetings with representatives of the Pirates of the Caribbean 5 production over several months,” Mr Hoye said.

“Council has gone to great lengths to assist the Pirates of the Caribbean 5 production, providing detailed assistance in regards to locations and ensuring any request, planning or otherwise, could be accommodated in the Douglas Shire.

“Council has received expressions of appreciation from the production for the amount of work and detail council has contributed to date.”

The ultimate fate of Douglas Shire’s involvement in the production remains to be seen.

When it was indicated last year that the region might be used for on-location filming, locals celebrated and offered themselves as extras and workers to production in droves.

None are yet to hear back from Disney or other production agencies.
