Tides may bring crocs further inland

Port Douglas residents should be aware of high tides allowing crocodiles further than normal access into waterways.

King tides over the weekend may not have resulted in severe floods as warned by council and weather services, but the possibility remains that elevated water levels in creeks, drainage trenches and wetlands have encouraged crocodiles to move further into those systems.

A 2.5 metre croc suspected of eating several family pets was removed from Rex Park Lake by the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection in September last year.

Wildlife handler Jessie Crampton from Hartley’s Creek Crocodile adventures said crocodiles would look for sheltered waterways with reliable food sources.

Sightings of a 4-metre crocodile off Four Mile Beach in August and October prompted widespread concern and Douglas Shire Council resolving to ask the State Government for faster action on concerning crocodile sightings.
