Police are thanking the community after tip-offs helped them find two vehicles stolen from Douglas Shire residents.

Following information provided by the public, police attended a property in Weipa on Tuesday afternoon and found a white Toyota Hilux and a four-wheeler motorbike reported stolen from Port Douglas and Mowbray last week.

Two 18-year-old males were found in possession of the vehicles - one was detained immediately and the other fled and was caught by police some time later.

The vehicles are in good order and are now being returned to their owners.

Their owners reported them stolen on the Port Douglas Buy Swap and Sell Facebook pages, which was reported on Newsport.

Sergeant Damian Meadows from Port Douglas Police expressed thanks to the community for their cooperation and help.

“Public information assisted greatly in resolving this matter,” Sgt Meadows said.

“Our job is made a lot easier when we receive public information so we would like to extend our thanks for that.

“It’s good to see the community looking out for one another.”
