Sign-on for Douglas basketball on Saturday

Thursday February 12 2015, 12:00pm

This Saturday (between 9am and 11am) will Port Douglas Basketball Club's sign-on day for ALL PLAYERS (Aussie Hoops, under 15 boys and girls and adults) at our fantastic stadium, PD Storm Surge Evacuation Centre, behind PD State School.

We are looking forward to growing the club again in just our third year, as last year we saw some great progress, including:

* The creation of a successful under 14s competition;

* The introduction of the Aussie Hoops program for kids aged 5-11;

* The approval of two grants, which allowed us to purchase equipment for the club (including our electronic scoreboard) and training programs for our coaches;

* Tremendous parent, player and community effort with fundraising and sponsorship, which also helped purchase the scoreboard;

* Coaching clinics from the Cairns Taipans NBL side and Bendigo Braves SEABL champions;

* A bigger-than-expected turnout for an adults shoot around on Wednesday nights;

* Players being selected for Cairns representative teams and second place for the Under 14s girls in the Mulgrave Association Friday night competition (in their first season);

* Hosting and participation in the quarterly Top of the North tournaments with Mareeba, Atherton and Mulgrave clubs;

* Participation in our first Port Douglas Carnivale street parade with Joe Blake and the Cairns Taipans!

 This year, we are excited to announce:

* Inclusion in the national Aussie Hoops program, which means our players will be eligible for participating at half time of any upcoming Australian Boomers and Aussie Opals national team games;

* The moving of the Aussie Hoops program back to Wednesday afternoons at 3.30pm (after school) to allow more kids to come directly from primary school;

* The introduction of an under 12s competition on Wednesday afternoons at 4.30pm (after Aussie Hoops);

* Under 15s competition and training moved to Saturday mornings from 9.30am to allow for future growth of the competition;

* More fundraising, grant acquisitions and sponsors backing PDBC Inc;

* The club moving to affiliation with Basketball Queensland (previously we were under the Mulgrave Assoc banner), meaning we have more access to state programs, which means more opportunities for players;

* Hoping  to grow the men's Wednesday shoot around to a competition format;

* The creation and purchase of a Douglas Heat representative strip.

There are plenty of opportunities for your child/yourself to be a member of PDBC in 2015 to promote basketball in the Douglas Region and help develop your child's self-confidence, fitness and social skills.

Come along this Saturday morning to our state-of-the-art stadium and sign on for 2015, where more information on online registrations will be given and the kids can have a shoot around.

New players, coaches and volunteers are welcome to come along and try basketball - bring a friend!

New sponsors are also sought - if you're in a position to help grow our club, please contact our committee on douglasheatbasketballclub@hotmail.com
