Paws and Claws animal shelter in Craiglie is putting a call out for temporary foster carers in anticipation of heavy rains due to Cyclone Nathan.

Paws president Michael Kerr said carers would only need to look after a dog or puppy for a few days and would make a lot of difference.

Nathan is expected to hit north of Port Douglas and Craiglie but heavy rains are still expected, with a risk of flash flood.

Paws and Claws can be contacted at 4098 5721.
