Mossman Library will launch the Dads Read program next month to support and encourage local dads to play an active role in the literacy development of their children.

The free monthly information sessions are designed to provide dads with the skills, confidence and resources to regularly read to their children.

Dads are encouraged to bring their children along to the workshops and learn about the importance of reading with them, develop new skills and techniques and take part in story sessions.

The Dads Read program is being run by Mossman Library assistant Bill Wilkie, a father of two young children who knows first-hand about the benefits of reading to kids from a young age.

“Reading to your children is a great way to bond with them, kids love books and they enjoy sharing that experience with their dads,” Mr Wilkie said.

“But for some dads, even if reading to their kids is something they want to do, they may not necessarily know how to go about it or have the skills to get the most benefit out of the experience.

“The Dads Read program provides information, resources and useful tips to help dads through the process with a focus on learning and enjoyment.

“There will be puzzles and games to entertain the kids while the dads take part in the information workshops and opportunities for dads and kids to participate in group Story Time sessions together.”

The Dads Read information sessions will be held at the Mossman Library from 10-11am on the first Saturday of the month, starting on Saturday 7 March.
