Weather guru's and BOM are predicting monsoonal rains and a likely category 2 cyclone to cross the coast as early as Christmas Eve.

What could possibly be named Cyclone Stan could bring wet and wild conditions over the Christmas weekend.

"The monsoon trough will continue to strengthen this week," the BOM said on its website today.

"A tropical low is expected to form over the Gulf of Carpentaria on Monday, then move slowly towards the southeast. This low may develop into a tropical cyclone late on Tuesday or during Wednesday."

Weather watching organisation Higgins Storm Chasing are also predicting the category 2 cyclone will hit Queensland this week.

"Our forecast confidence is now high that a Tropical Low will form into a cyclone in the Gulf of Carpentaria within 3 days," the organisation said today.

"It is then likely to cross the bottom of the Gulf and track South East to impact the North QLD Coast."

The monsoon trough will also drag right down the coast to Mackay and with this combination bring very heavy rainfall from Mackay to Mt Isa NORTH with Rainfall totals up to 500mm through Christmas."
