BREAKING: The mains gas line which feeds into the accommodation houses on the corner of Garrick and Mowbray streets has been ruptured this afternoon by contractors working in the vicinity.

Sergeant Damien Meadows while at the scene said contractors were having difficulty locating the junction to shut down the gas lines to stop the feed.

“Contractors are trying to shut down the feed and Port Douglas Police have instigated the Public Safety Preservation Act1986 which enables the emergency force evacuation of the area.

“Due to low lying LPG gases at ground level area any ignition source could be dangerous,” warned Sergeant Meadows.

Fire Brigade Services were using water to dispose the gas fumes.

It is yet to be confirmed who was conducting works in the vicinity at the time of the incident.

Police advise to stay clear of this area until further notice.
