Date claimers for Douglas Christmas festivities.  As Christmas is fast approaching and the Douglas Shire is getting into the festive cheer, Council has contributed around $25,000 towards festivities for 2015.

Council decorates a Community Christmas Tree in Anzac Park Port Douglas and in Front Street Mossman next to the Post Office. Over the past 14 months Council has spent around $10,000 on lights and decorations for the Community Christmas Trees.

Kelly’s Crane Hire donated their services and machinery to put up the Christmas decorations. This year there will be approximately 5000 lights and 80 decorations in each tree.

Be sure to look out for the trees being decorated on Tuesday 8 December and their inaugural lighting up in the evening.

Another festive event will be Handel’s Messiah Concert.  Council contributed $3,000 under the Regional Arts Development Fund towards the Tropical Queensland Oratorio Society Choir’s Handel’s Messiah Concert which will be held at the Port Douglas Catholic Church in Endeavour Street from 2:00pm on Sunday 6 December.

Council has provided $6,000 annually to the Douglas Shire Community Services Association (Mossman Community Centre) to host the Christmas in the Park festivities. Christmas in the Park will be held in George Davis Park from 3:00pm with Christmas Carols at 6:00pm on Saturday 12 December. Free activities include a jumping castle, face painting, a lip sync competition with great prizes and there will also be food and drink available as well as a visit from Santa.

New Year’s Eve in Port Douglas is sure to be a great way to bring in the New Year. Council has contributed $6,000 to the Douglas Chamber of Commerce for New Year’s Eve festivities. This includes fireworks displays in Anzac Park at 8.30pm and midnight as well as for the first time this year free family friendly entertainment in Market Park from 4:00pm-7:00pm including games, face painting, a magic show and street performers.

Festive events such as these depend a great deal on community support.  Be sure to mark these dates in your diaries and come along to support the organisations hosting the events and the Douglas Shire Council for investing in the Shires festive season.
