Thousands of runners will be making themselves that little bit healthier this November but do they realise they will be making the Great Barrier Reef healthier as well?
Organisers of the November's Great Barrier Reef Marathon last year established the Run for the Reef Research Fund partnering with the world's leading Reef Custodian University, James Cook University.
Each runner becomes an ambassador and guardian of the Great Barrier Reef by participating in the event with $20 donated from each of the registrations for the 21.2, 42.2 and 74 Ultra Marathon.
Managing Director Sam Cullen says "after registration every runner is then also invited to become an 'everyday hero' by raising money for frontline research and marine life protection projects via peer to peer fundraising online."
Everyday Hero is the Australia's largest fundraising platform raising millions of dollars every year for vital charities. The establishment of the Run for the Reef Fund and Everyday Hero fundrasiing program is the world's only Marathon dedicated to raising money for Great Barrier Reef protection and research.
"This is a landmark initiative" says Jess Coleman General Manager of the marathon festival. "We know people care about protecting marine animal life and the coral reefs –this is now a fantastic way to show their support."
"The reef is particularly important to our community here in Douglas and it is the same up and down the East Coast. In fact Queenslanders’ in general have a very special relationship with the reef."
The marathon launched their new 30 and 15 second television commercials over the weekend. The commercial is a result of the marathon team collaborating with its legacy partner JCU and their marketing department.
Sam Cullen said "we are thrilled to have the support and partnership of one of the region's largest and most successful organisations in JCU. The JCU marketing department is very experienced and has delivered a high quality television commercial that will be seen on Channel 7 right down the east coast to Brisbane over the next months.
Registration 'Early Bird' ends 11 September where participants can take advantage of discounted entry fees. For more information visit the website www.greatbarrierreefmarathon.com.au
