Winners announced for flashing lure competition

The Newsport Balista Fishing Photo competition to win advanced LED-equipped lures has wrapped up.

13-year-old Oscar Cambage's  (above) competition-winning photo of a 76cm barra caught off the shores of Port Douglas came packaged with a ripping yarn as backstory.

"It was after a full day of study and homework that Mum and Dad decided to go for a picnic at the park," Oscar said.

"So off I went for a walk and a flick on the razor sharp oyster covered rocks and found a calm bay filled with bait fish.

"I was using a 90mm Roosta popper on a 2-6 kg rod using 20lb Fireline with a 30lb Nylon leader.

"After about 20 minutes flicking at every angle off the rock edge I noticed a bit of movement in the water!

"With my adrenalin pumping I flicked a couple more casts and all of a sudden, BOOF!

"This barra totally inhaled the lure, swam deep through the underwater rocks and I started to feel the leader scrape across the oysters and rocks, so I put it on a free spool and it managed to float its way up to the surface. "Straight away I flicked the ball arm over and made tension with the line. "The fish did a few good jumps and then I landed it.

"Ten minutes later I caught his mate, another 70cm Barra!

"It was a great way to end the day!"

Top work, Oscar, we're sure you'll put your prize of three advanced LED-equipped Balista Lures to good use catching even more impressive barra.

Runner-up Rohan Taylor might have a few more years under the belt than Oscar but that doesn't make less of a feat of the capture of his magnificent spanish mackerel out at sea off Port Douglas.

Fellow runner-up Peter Davidson's epic battle with a massive cobia is a fishing tale for the ages.

He first snagged it while kayak fishing off Cape Tribulation.

The beast towed him for two kilometres before finally succumbing.

Sy Dolphin's enormous red emperor, caught on St Crispin's Reef, lands him the final runner-up

Runners-up receive two Balista Lures each.

Prizes can be collected from the Newsport office at the corner of Wharf and Inlet Street in Port Douglas or by calling 4099 5122 during business hours.

Thanks to everyone who entered and thanks to Balista for sponsoring the competition.
