Tablelands speeding worries cops

With Easter over for another year, police are concerned with the actions of some motorists on Tablelands roads.

The most disturbing figures to police were the number of Traffic Infringement Notices (TINs) issued to motorists for exceeding the speed. Police issued 224 TINs for exceed speed over the Easter period.

Two motorists were issued notices to appear in court for excessive speeds.

On Easter Sunday on the Kennedy Highway at Koah at approximately 8pm, it will be alleged that a 20-year-old P1 plate Cairns man was detected travelling at 194km/h in a 100km/h zone.  The driver is due to appear in the Mareeba Magistrates Court on April 27.

At Mutchilba on Easter Monday at approximately 3.30pm, police detected a 17-year-old P1 holder allegedly doing 201km/h in 100km/h zone on wet roads. The Mutchilba man was issued with a Notice to Appear for dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and is expected to attend the Mareeba Magistrates Court on April 27.

Police conducted over 3300 Roadside Breath Tests during the Easter Long Weekend and five people were charged with Drink Driving offences. All motorists were issued with Notice of Suspensions and are due to appear in Tableland Magistrates Courts in the coming weeks.

Police also issued 63 Traffic Infringement Notices for traffic offences including no seatbelts, exceeding speed limits, unlicenced driving and unregistered and uninsured as well as public nuisance offences.

Acting Inspector Kevin Gleeson of Tablelands Patrol Group said that the results are disappointing.

“Our road safety message is obviously not getting through to motorists. Excessive speeds of those detected over the weekend are not only dangerous to the drivers and their passengers but to all other road users,” Acting Inspector Gleeson said.

“Emergency Services want to see everyone arrive home safely and will not tolerate dangerous driving in any form. Police will continue with high visibility policing throughout the year and advise that it is not acceptable to place other people’s lives at risk when driving upon our roadways.”
