Federal Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch has passed what he claims is supporting evidence in the domestic violence case against Cook MP Billy Gordon to police, denying he is using the matter to score political points.
While he would not discuss the details of the evidence, Mr Entsch urged people to remember the impact and seriousness of domestic violence and abuse, also voicing concern at media stories that he says portray Mr Gordon 'as a victim'.
Mr Entsch said that anyone that has been a victim of violence or abuse should contact police or his office.
"Late on Friday (10 April) I received further correspondence on the Billy Gordon matter which I have today passed onto Cairns police to be dealt with appropriately," Mr Entsch said.
"I will not go into detail as to the content, other than to say that the information supports the claims being made by Billy Gordon’s ex?partner in relation to alleged domestic violence.
"It is very disappointing that a number of media articles to date have portrayed Billy Gordon as a victim in this situation. We must remember that a woman and her children are the real victims here and their voices need to be heard, without attracting criticism for the manner and timing in which she came forward.
"I’d also encourage anyone else who has witnessed, or been subjected to, violent or abusive behaviour to contact the police directly, or to contact my office knowing that the information will be passed onto the appropriate authorities."
