A recently-opened gallery in Port Douglas is bringing a touch of the mystic world to the town’s art scene.

New Visions Art Gallery opened on Macrossan Street above Paddy’s Port Douglas on September 1.

The creative force behind New Visions is German export Susanna Isabella, who creates surrealist and fantasy paintings in addition to guided readings as a medium.

Ms Isabella’s works draw inspiration from a variety of fantasy sources including the Dreamtime, often featuring dream-like nature scenes and fairy kingdoms.

This dream-centric approach combined with her spiritual focus sets her apart from a technology-filled modern world, she says.

“We live in a world of technology - everyone these days is on their phones or playing Xbox and Playstation and they are losing contact with themselves and their dreams,” she said while speaking to The Newsport in her gallery.

“I love to teach people to dream and to be dreamers - everything in this room, indeed everything that people make is first dreamed of them manifested.

“Getting back into contact with your inner self and your dreams is a way to be happy.”

Ms Isabella’s approach has been very successful so far - she has been swamped with clients coming to see her artwork but also to conduct reading sessions.

“I am busy all the time,” she said with a laugh.

“I am going to have to lock the studio from time to time so I have time to paint.”

Ms Isabella says she found her gift as a medium after waking from a coma, bought on by a cardiac arrest during the birth of her seventh child and describes her sessions as ‘journaling’ in which a client’s questions about themselves and life are answered.

Ms Isabella has a long history in Port Douglas, beginning with her work appearing in the ‘Starchild’ exhibition in 2004 and also featuring in the Stargate 111 exhibition at the Sugar Wharf in 2009 which was opened by then-Cairns Regional Councillor and now Douglas Shire Mayor Julia Leu.

She will be running exhibitions at New Visions throughout the year including ‘Atlantis Under the Ocean’ and ‘Cosmic Connection’.
