Mackay Sugar employee seriously injured at Mossman Mill

Thursday September 25 2014, 1:30pm

At approximately 8.30am Thursday morning, a male Mossman Mill employee received serious injuries to his right foot while working within the mill’s cane receival area.

The mill was immediately shut down and Emergency Services were called to the site. Initial investigations suggest the employee slipped while working in the area and caught his foot in the mill’s bin tippler.

Emergency Services and mill personnel assisted in freeing the employee, with the employee then airlifted to Cairns Hospital for treatment.

Mackay Sugar has engaged the services of Gryphon Psychology to provide support to the injured employee and his family and Mossman Mill personnel over the coming weeks.

A Workplace Health and Safety investigation into the incident is currently underway.
