Port Douglas has again brought the international spotlight to shine on the region by being voted number four in the top 10 destinations in Australia.  It received top billing in this year’s Trip Advisor Traveler’s Choice Awards for best holiday destination.

Trip Advisor is the world’s largest travel site and its annual Traveller’s Choice Awards, now in their twelfth year, honour the world’s best - earning their distinction from those who know them best - real travellers.

Tourism Port Douglas and Daintree(TPDD) executive officer Tara Bennett said the accolade was a welcome recognition for the region, as well as the iconic holiday destination, which had appeared in the top 10 a number of times over the years.

“Recognition by Trip Advisor cements our position as Australia’s premier tropical destination,” Ms Bennett said. “Achieving fourth position after the major capital cities for 2014 shows that Port Douglas is experiencing a resurgence in popularity.

“Our region is ideally positioned to offer holiday makers a wide range of reef, rainforest and beach experiences. Recognition from Trip Advisor is a result of Port Douglas providing a highly satisfying holiday experience.”

Ms Bennett said Port Douglas was popular among both domestic and international visitors and enjoyed more than 40 per cent repeat visitation.

“This signifies the high level of satisfaction by people who visit as well as the diverse range of experiences available,” she said.

Last year, Port Douglas received top billing in the annual Trip Advisor Traveler’s Choice Awards for accommodation.

In the 2012 Trip Advisor Traveler’s Choice Awards, Port Douglas was named number three behind Sydney and Melbourne in the top 10 destinations in Australia, while ranking number eight in the top 25 destinations in the South Pacific. It was also named the ninth best beach destination in Australia.
