Players from the Port Douglas Astute Financial Muddies joined with players from United to farewell fallen Test cricketer Phil Hughes at their game on Sunday morning. 

The two teams marked a minute's silence before the morning's game at Griffith Park, with Hughes' Test Player number of 408 displayed along with the Latin word 'Vale', meaning 'farewell'. 

Muddies president Steve Doble last week paid tribute to Hughes in a touching farewell, available below:

What a tragedy. 

A tragedy of the highest order. 

Unprecedented and unforseen. 

A young guy with so much to offer the Gentleman’s Game, he had his fair share of personal disappointments but always fought back and fought back stronger, unfortunately this was not something that anyone could change, even as hard an Aussie nugget as Phil was and as good as protective equipment can be or competitive your opposition may act.

The sport will change as a result, I don’t know exactly how, but it will. 

David Hookes was similar in so many ways, a gritty left hander but he managed to fulfil his cricket career before also being taken too early.

Justin Langer, another left hander, was concussed and this influenced his future in the game.

Mark Boucher from South Africa suffered a career-ending eye injury from a bail flying up.

Cricket is a potentially dangerous game and I have seen nasty injuries, but so, too, is life.

Tragedy can strike at any time and although at the state level it is professional sport, it does not change it being a game.

A game played with high stakes, but still played by gentlemen (and women) for enjoyment, comradery and fun.

There is no doubt the world of cricketers, the world of Mums and Dads, Brothers and sisters, wives, girlfriends or loved ones will mourn this day created through a tragic accident where the mounting numbers one day perhaps just had to fall.
