The Great Barrier Reef Marathon Festival on Sunday will feature two of Australia’s most decorated long distance runners.
The 1500 runners now entered over 6 events in Port Douglas will have the opportunity of rubbing shoulders with Olympian Steve Moneghetti and Ultra Marathon superstar Pat Farmer.
Moneghetti is back to take on all-comers as he looks for back to back wins in the Great Barrier Reef Marathon while Pat Farmer is set to take on the 74km JCU Ultra Marathon.
Olympian Steve Moneghetti knows that his task will not be easy. “I have seen the quality of the runners entered in this event. This marathon is one of the highlights of my year. The course is stunning and I know the competition this year is going to be tough.
“What I love is the number of first timers entered and the thrill that they will get when they literally climb the mountain that this event represents”.
Pat Farmer is one of the world's most renowned ultra marathon runners, having conquered many of the toughest challenges ever undertaken including an amazing Pole to Pole Run, a 5 stage 10 month, epic journey from the North to the South Pole. Most recently he ran through the Middle East to promote peace in the region.
Pat Farmer was attracted by the diversity of the 74km course with varied terrains of beaches, stunning national park trails and the infamous 'Bump Track'. "I am excited about the challenge of the JCU Ultra Marathon", said Farmer. "Having the support of my sponsor Hivita Vitamins also supporting the event is a fantastic coming together of great Australians".
