Marathon organisers thank volunteers, sponsors

Organisers of the Great Barrier Reef Marathon Festival have extended a heartfelt thanks to all volunteers, participants, supporters and sponsors of the event.

The Festival attracted more than 1500 participants and thousands of tag-along supporters, in addition to raising  $15,000 for research into protection for the Great Barrier Reef.

The atmosphere and organisation of the marathon was commended by several participants, including marathon winners Jimmy Hilton and Saskia Jurriaans in addition to marathon runner-up and event ambassador Steve Moneghetti.

Event organiser Sarah Cullen lauded the efforts of volunteers that dedicated their time and efforts to the Festival.

“A huge shout out to all of our volunteers whom without their help, dedication and fun the event simply wouldn't be the same,” Ms Cullen said.

“Their tireless effort to show both locals and visitors just why Port Douglas and the Great Barrier Reef Marathon should be top of their running calendar is just amazing.

“The praise we have received for the volunteers from competitors across all events has been simply second to none.”

Great Barrier Reef Marathon marketing manager Jess Coleman thanked the event’s sponsors for their support.

“I’d like to extend a deep and sincere thanks to all our sponsors on behalf of the whole Great Barrier Reef Marathon team,” Ms Coleman said.

“Without your support this event simply wouldn’t have had the growth it is had in the last three years.”

“We look forward to making the Great Barrier Reef Marathon Festival even bigger and better next year and continuing to put Port Douglas on the map as a sports and events tourism destination of choice - lock in November 1st 2015!”
