Fire on Flagstaff Hill

Fire crews battle blaze on Flagstaff Hill

Tuesday November 11 2014, 10:30am

A fire that broke out on the seaward slope of Flagstaff Hill last night has been suppressed by emergency crews, but nearby residents are still going to have to deal with smoky conditions for some time.

Newsport contributor Nick Malachi captured dramatic footage of the blaze on his boat off the coast yesterday evening, which is viewable in the above window.

Firefighters, police and ambulance crews responded to the fire, which started in the dry grass and leaf litter of the northeastern rainforest strip of the hill at about 6:30pm on Monday evening.

Two urban firefighter units from the Port Douglas station and one rural unit from Mowbray were deployed to combat the fire along Wharf Street,  which proved difficult do the steep, inaccessible slope that the blaze started on.

Crews instead focused on preventing the fire from reaching nearby properties, which they did successfully before bringing the fire largely under control.

However due to the source of the fire being inaccessible, crews were again called out at about 6:30am on Tuesday morning to combat small flare-ups, which have now been suppressed.

No-one was seriously injured but one firefighter was affected by smoke and exertion, and was treated on scene by Queensland Fire and Emergency Services colleagues.

QFES Port Douglas station officer Ben Daley advised that while the fire was under control, nearby residents would still experience smoky conditions for possibly the next few days as small spot fires burned through remaining fuel sources.

Officer Daley said it was important for residents to exercise fire safety during the dry season.

"This time of year there is always a heightened risk of fire," he said.

"People can help keep themselves and their families safe by keeping their properties clean, cleaning out their gutters, not dumping green waste on or near their properties, and of course by contacting 000 if the spot a fire.

"I'd also like to commend the Queensland Police service and ambulance crews for their well-coordinated response along with the rural firies during the incident."

Investigations into the cause of the fire are still underway.
