Council demands faster croc response

Douglas Shire Council will request faster action on problem crocodiles from the State Government in the wake of several sightings around Douglas Shire.

Council will also request for crocodiles that present themselves at boat ramps or swimming areas and are reported by the community as being of concern to be removed by the Department using contractors.

The resolution was adopted after Council noted the outcomes of community engagement activities on crocodile management in the Douglas Shire which included an information session in Port Douglas in August.

Councillor David Carey noted that only 31 submissions on crocodile management had been received out of Douglas Shire’s more than 6,000 residents, indicating the vast majority of people were happy with current crocodile management policy,

Mayor Julia Leu said that while the community was divided on how to best approach crocodile management in the Douglas Shire, she is confident Council’s request to the Minister of Environment and Heritage Protection for additional resources and stronger enforcement was the best outcome.

“This approach is all about ensuring the safety of beachgoers and boat ramp users from the risk of crocodiles to the best of our ability,” Mayor Leu said.

“Having local contractors who can provide a rapid response to reports of crocodiles of concern means they have the best chance of locating and trapping them.

“Crocodiles are an important part of our local natural environment but it is vital we do all we can to prevent an attack.

“Of course we live in croc country and it is essential for locals and visitors to remain ‘Croc-Wise’ and take all necessary precautions whenever they enter the water.”

Croc-Wise information is available on Council’s website.
