Day 2 saw the newly named Astute Muddies unable to claim 1st innings points but still come away with the win 264 to 230 with 8 wickets in hand.
Continuing on from the previous week the Muddies needed a mere 13 runs with 2 wickets in hand to take 1st innings points. With the words of Coach Damien Darlington, “these will be the hardest 13 runs you’ll ever have to make” fresh in their ears, unbeaten batsmen Nathan Deuble and Curtis White returned to the crease. Two overs and two runs later the Muddies were all out for 141 with Nathan making 24 and Curtis 1. The unbeaten batsmen was yet again Daniel Davidson finishing on 56 from 78.
Atherton’s 2nd innings saw arguably the Muddies tightest bowling and fielding effort this year. Opening the bowling, Curtis White was bowling well before retiring injured. Operating from the opposite end, Liam Clacherty took a wicket with his 1st ball to finish with 1 for 9 from his two overs. Nathan Deuble, still on the comeback trail from injury, bowled well with 1 for 12 while Connor White took 1 for 10 from his 2 overs. Vincent Killeen and Fraser Allen both bowled well taking 1 for 5 and 1 for 8 respectively. Finn Stanaway bowled well to take the wicket of younger brother Ryan who was filling in for an under manned Atherton. Tex McDowall finished with figures of 1 for 8 and Nick Rayner was again economical with figures of 0 for 4. Reuben Allison continues to impress with the ball taking 2 for 3 from two overs. Solid bowling and tight fielding saw Atherton restricted to a 2nd innings total of 78.
2nd innings openers Nathan and Nick got off to flyer belting 8 from the 1st over before Nick smashed one straight back at the bowler who was able to hold onto the catch.
This bought Daniel Davidson back to the crease who combined with Nathan, proceeded to tear apart the Atherton bowling attack smashing a collective eleven 4’s and two 6’s on their way to a combined total of 109 from just 97 balls. Nathan retired on 54 from 45 which included four consecutive boundaries. Vincent remained unbeaten with 5 from 3 and Daniel who is yet to lose his wicket this season made his 3rd consecutive half century to finish on 55 from 52 balls which included three 4’s and two 6’s.
The boys celebrated their 2nd win for the year with a rendition of the Astute Muddies theme song. Thankfully the boys are performing well on the field because none of them appear likely to make a career out of singing!! The boys will take on Innisfail in their first away game for the season this coming Saturday.
