Police urge public to report crime

Authorities say concern over a spate of burglaries in a small far north Queensland town should die down following the arrest of a 25-year old man on Wednesday.

Mossman Police charged a Cooya Beach man with one count of burglary following investigations into a number of property related offences in recent months.

Police will allege the man forced entry to a Cooya Beach dwelling in mid-March and stole a sum of money.

Detective Sergeant Trevor Perham said some community members had distributed flyers around Cooya Beach accusing the man of several crimes.

Authorities said concerned residents should always contact police rather than resorting to issuing flyers.

"It's certainly not the right way to go about it," Det Sgt Perham said.

"What if you've got it wrong about this guy?

"If you know that someone's committed a crime the best thing you can do is report it to us."

Det Sgt Perham said he had heard of a number of thefts in Cooya Beach and Mossman that had gone unreported recently, making police's job extremely difficult.

"When we came to look at what offences had been reported to us we only had records of one burglary we could link the alleged offender to," he said.

"If you are a victim of crime report it to police so that we a record of it.

"Be observant and report all suspicious behaviours and then we can help you do something about it."

The arrest served as a timely reminder for Cooya Beach residents to lock their doors and windows before leaving home Det Sgt Perham said.

The man has also been charged with two counts each of unlicensed driving and driving an unregistered and uninsured motor vehicle and one count each of possession of a dangerous drug and committing a public nuisance.

The man is scheduled to appear in the Mossman Magistrates Court on June 18.
