Motorised esky races will make their Carnivale debut at the inaugural Backyard Games this weekend in Rex Smeal Park.

Festivalgoers can race the two horsepower eskies for free with the chance of having their name etched into Carnivale history by winning the first Grand Prix Motorised Esky Drag Racing trophy.

Carnivale General Manager Roy Weavers said the 48-litre eskies - which can reach a top speed of 12 kilometres per hour - were sure to be a hit with families.

"There are helmets, knee and elbow pads provided and nothing fires up a sibling rivalry quite like a motorised esky race," Mr Weavers said.

The Backyard Games will feature a swag of other quirky competitions with giant darts and giant jenga sure to be a hit he added.

There will also be coconut croquet, ladder golf and team tug o' wars through the day along with other surprises throughout the day.

Each game will have its own umpire and winners in both adult and children’s categories will be presented with medals and trophies and of course get a full year's worth of bragging rights as champions in their individual super sporting events.
